How to Set Up a Savings Goal in Your Banking App

A savings goal, sometimes called a "piggy bank," is a special place inside your banking app where you can set aside money for a specific purpose — for example, a holiday, a gift, or an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. Money in a savings goal is kept separate from the rest of your account, which makes it easier to see how much you have saved so far. Setting one up usually takes less than five minutes, and you can change or delete it at any time. Don't worry — nothing bad will happen if you tap the wrong thing. You can always go back a step.

If you are still choosing a personal account and want one with a convenient savings-goal feature, you can compare available offers on the personal accounts page.

How to set up a savings goal step by step

The steps below describe how this generally works in many popular banking apps. If your app looks a little different, don't worry — look for similar words, such as "Goals," "Piggy Banks," or "Savings."

  1. Open your bank's app on your phone by tapping its icon (a small picture) on the home screen.
  2. Log in to the app by entering your PIN, password, or using your fingerprint, just as you always do.
  3. Wait for the app to load your account and show the main screen with your balance (the current amount of money in your account).
  4. Find a section at the bottom of the screen or in the side menu labelled "Goals," "Piggy Banks," or "Savings" — often marked with a piggy bank or jar icon.
  5. Tap this section to open the savings goals area.
  6. Look for a button labelled "Add new goal" or "Create piggy bank" — usually a large, clearly visible button with a plus sign (+).
  7. Tap this button to start creating your new goal.
  8. Type a name for your goal into the text box, for example "Holiday" or "Emergency fund."
  9. Type in the target amount, meaning the total sum of money you want to save, for example 2000 zloty.
  10. If the app asks, choose a date by which you want to reach your goal, for example in six months. This step can often be skipped if you don't have a specific date in mind.
  11. If you want, turn on automatic saving, such as setting aside a fixed amount every month.
  12. If your app offers it, you can also turn on transaction round-ups — a feature that automatically rounds each purchase up to the nearest whole amount and sets the difference aside in your goal. For example, if you pay 12.40 zloty for shopping, the app will set aside 0.60 zloty towards your goal.
  13. Check the details you entered once more — the name, the amount, and the date if you set one.
  14. Tap "Save," "Create," or "Done" to confirm your new savings goal.
  15. Wait for a confirmation message showing that your goal was created — usually a short message or a green checkmark (a confirmation symbol, often shaped like a tick).

From now on, your new goal will appear in your list of savings goals. You can add extra money to it at any time by tapping its name and choosing "Add funds" or "Deposit."

What to do if something goes wrong

  • I don't see this option in my app. Not every bank offers a savings-goal feature, and sometimes it has a different name. Check the "More" or "Settings" section. If you still cannot find it, call your bank's customer service line — the number is printed on the back of your payment card — and ask if this feature is available.
  • I cannot change the name of my goal. Open the goal's details (tap its name in the list) and look for a pencil icon (the edit symbol) or the word "Edit." If renaming is not possible, try deleting the goal and creating a new one with the correct name — the money is usually returned to your main account after deletion.
  • I want to delete my savings goal and get my money back. Open the goal's details, find the option "Delete goal" or "Close piggy bank," usually near the bottom of the screen. Money saved in a goal is automatically returned to your main account — it does not disappear. If you don't see the money in your main account after deleting the goal, refresh the screen (swipe down from the top) or log out and log back in.
  • The app freezes or shows an error. Close the app completely and open it again. If the problem continues, contact your bank's customer service line — never tell anyone your password or a one-time SMS code (a short code made of numbers that your bank sometimes sends to confirm a transaction) over the phone. Your bank will never ask for it by phone. If someone calls asking for this code, hang up and call back using the number on the back of your card.

Summary

Setting up a savings goal is a simple action that can be changed or undone at any time. Here is a quick recap of the steps:

Remember — there is no need to rush. You can take these steps slowly, and if something goes wrong, you can always start over or call your bank for help.
