Guide: Personal accounts

How a personal bank account works in Poland: fees, account-opening bonuses, BFG deposit guarantees and your rights as a bank customer.

1

A sign-up bonus can be taxed

Bonuses for opening an account are tax-free if their one-time value does not exceed PLN 2,000 (Art. 21(1)(68) of the PIT Act). Above that amount the bank withholds a flat 10% income tax (Art. 30(1)(2) of the PIT Act), but in practice many banks cover this tax themselves so the customer receives the full advertised amount.

2

'Zero fees' usually comes with conditions

No monthly account fee typically requires meeting conditions such as a minimum monthly inflow to the account or a set number of card or BLIK transactions. Check these conditions in the bank's fee schedule before choosing an account, not just in the advertisement.

3

Your money is covered by the BFG guarantee

Deposits held at banks and credit unions (SKOKs) operating in Poland are guaranteed by the Bank Guarantee Fund (BFG) up to the zloty equivalent of EUR 100,000 per depositor per bank. For specific funds (e.g. from selling a home, an inheritance, or severance pay) that reached the account no later than 3 months before the bank's insolvency was declared, the BFG, on the depositor's request, pays additional protection up to a combined equivalent of EUR 200,000.

4

Switching banks is made easier by law

Under the Payment Services Act, the account-switching service requires the new bank, once it receives full information about standing orders and direct debits from the old bank, to set them up within at least 6 business days. This means the customer doesn't have to re-enter every recurring payment manually.

5

No account history or income? There's the basic payment account

Anyone who doesn't already hold another zloty account in Poland can apply for a Basic Payment Account (PRP, Art. 59ia-59ih of the Payment Services Act). The bank must provide it free of charge for up to 5 domestic transactions a month, and must decide on the application within 10 business days.

6

A teen's account needs a parent's consent

From age 13, a minor has limited legal capacity, but opening a bank account still requires the consent of a parent or legal guardian, who usually must be present when the contract is signed. For younger children, the account is opened and fully controlled by the parent.

Frequently asked questions

A personal account (current account) is used for everyday operations: receiving your salary, card and BLIK payments, and transfers, and usually pays no interest or only a token amount. A savings account is meant for holding a surplus and usually offers higher interest, but with a limited number of free withdrawals per month. Both are payment accounts under the Payment Services Act and can be held at the same bank at the same time.
If the one-time value of a promotional-sale reward does not exceed PLN 2,000, it is exempt from income tax (Art. 21(1)(68) of the PIT Act). Rewards above that limit are subject to a flat 10% income tax on the entire value (Art. 30(1)(2) of the PIT Act), which the payer, i.e. the bank, generally remits. In practice, many banks advertise the bonus as a net amount and cover this tax themselves, so check the promotion's terms.
Funds held at domestic banks and credit unions (SKOKs) are covered by Bank Guarantee Fund (BFG) protection up to the zloty equivalent of EUR 100,000 per depositor at a given bank, regardless of how many accounts they hold there. Branches of banks from other EU countries operating in Poland are not covered by the BFG: their customers are protected by the guarantee scheme of the country where the bank is headquartered, also up to EUR 100,000. If a bank fails, the BFG pays out the guaranteed amount, and in certain cases (e.g. funds from selling a home received within the 3 months before the guarantee event) protection can reach the equivalent of EUR 200,000. The guarantee does not cover things like investment fund units or bonds sold by the bank.
No, the APR (RRSO) is a cost indicator for consumer credit and applies to loans, credit cards and similar borrowing, not to current accounts. For a personal account, what matters is the monthly maintenance fee, the conditions for waiving it, and any interest paid on the balance, not an APR figure.
A Basic Payment Account (PRP) is one that a consumer who does not already hold another zloty account in Poland offering similar operations can apply for (Art. 59ia of the Payment Services Act). The bank or credit union (for a SKOK, only for its own members) must decide on the application and either sign the contract or refuse within 10 business days, and refusal is only allowed for reasons listed in the Act. The account covers deposits, cash withdrawals and payment transactions within the EU, and up to 5 domestic transactions a month are free.
The customer signs an authorization at the new bank, and the banks then exchange the information about standing orders and direct debits between themselves. Under the Payment Services Act, the new bank sets up the transferred standing orders and direct debits no earlier than at least 6 business days after receiving complete information from the previous bank. If either bank fails to meet its obligations and the customer suffers financial loss as a result, it must compensate that loss.
Yes, you can terminate an account contract at any time, with immediate effect, unless the contract sets a notice period of no more than 1 month (Art. 35 of the Payment Services Act). Termination by the customer is generally free; the bank may only charge a termination fee if it happens within the first 6 months after the contract was signed and the contract explicitly provides for such a fee. In addition, if the bank changes its terms or fee schedule, the customer can terminate the contract with immediate effect and at no cost before the changes take effect (Art. 29(2)(2) of the Payment Services Act).
A child under 13 has no legal capacity, so the account is opened and fully controlled by a parent or guardian on their behalf. After turning 13, a person has limited legal capacity and can have their own account, but opening and managing a bank account usually still requires a parent's or guardian's consent, who is often required to be present when signing the contract. Full independent control over a bank account only comes with reaching adulthood (age 18).
A consumer who signed a bank account contract remotely (e.g. online or by phone) can withdraw from it within 14 days without giving a reason and at no cost, under the Consumer Rights Act. If the bank failed to inform the customer of this right, the withdrawal period may be extended. If, at the customer's request, the bank already started providing services before the 14 days expired, it may charge only for the services actually provided up to the date of withdrawal.
Yes, interest on funds held in bank accounts is subject to a flat 19% income tax, the so-called 'Belka tax' (Art. 30a of the PIT Act). The bank withholds this tax automatically when paying out interest, so the customer doesn't need to declare it separately in their tax return. In practice, most personal accounts pay no interest or only a token amount, so the tax involved is usually small.
Domestic banks and branches of foreign banks operating in Poland can be verified using the search tool for supervised entities on the website of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (knf.gov.pl). A bank from another EU country can operate in Poland under an EU notification, without a separate KNF licence, but under the supervision of its home country's authority, and its deposits are then covered by that country's guarantee scheme, not the Polish BFG. The KNF also publishes a list of public warnings naming entities suspected of operating without the required authorisation.
